Learning to read what the skin is trying to say.

During my years working in my skin clinic, I began to notice something.

Often, before a woman had even sat down, her skin was already telling me something.

Not everything, of course. Skin doesn’t tell us its whole story just by looking at it.

But there were clues.

A little redness.

Skin that looked tight or lacked its usual suppleness.

A dullness that hadn’t been there before.

An increase in sensitivity.

Perhaps a few more breakouts than usual.

These little changes were often the beginning of a much bigger conversation.

And I learned not to rush to conclusions.

Instead, I would ask questions.

How has your skin been feeling lately?

Has anything changed in your routine?

How have you been sleeping?

Have you been under more stress than usual?

Have you been travelling or experiencing a change in climate?

Sometimes the answer was obvious.

Other times, it took a little more conversation.

But over thousands of consultations, I learned that one of the most important skills in caring for skin isn’t simply knowing which product to recommend.

It’s learning how to listen.

Your skin is always communicating

We often think of our skin as something we need to fix when something changes.

A breakout appears, so we reach for a treatment.

Our skin feels dry, so we buy a richer moisturiser.

We notice more visible lines, so we search for the latest anti-ageing ingredient.

But what if we paused before trying to fix it?

What if we asked:

“What is my skin trying to tell me?”

Skin is constantly responding to what is happening both around us and within us.

Changes in weather and climate can affect it.

Stress can leave clues.

Hormonal changes can alter the way it behaves.

Travel, lack of sleep and changes in routine can all influence how our skin looks and feels.

Even the products we have been using successfully for years may no longer be appropriate when our skin’s needs change.

That’s why I have never believed that skincare should be about following a rigid routine forever.

Our skin changes.

Our skincare needs to be able to change with it.

From observation to understanding

One of the most rewarding parts of my work was seeing the moment when a woman began to understand her own skin.

Perhaps she had always thought she had “dry skin”, only to discover that dehydration was the real issue.

Perhaps she had been exfoliating frequently because her skin looked dull, when what her skin really needed was a little more support and less stimulation.

Or perhaps she had simply become so focused on correcting what she saw in the mirror that she had forgotten to notice how her skin actually felt.

These moments taught me something important.

Good skincare isn’t about doing more.

It’s about understanding what your skin needs now.

That philosophy continues to guide the way I work today.

Although my clinic has closed, I still have the privilege of helping women understand their skin through online consultations and personalised skincare guidance.

The conversations simply happen differently now.

Instead of sitting together in my treatment room, we can connect online, look at your skin concerns, talk through your routine and consider what may have changed.

The foundation is still the same:

Listen first. Understand second. Choose products third.

Try this with your own skin

The next time you notice something has changed, resist the urge to immediately buy something new.

Instead, take a moment to observe.

Ask yourself:

What does my skin feel like today?

What does it look like?

When did I first notice the change?

What has changed in my life, my environment or my routine?

You may be surprised by what you discover.

Because your skin isn’t trying to make things difficult.

It’s giving you information.

You just need to learn its language.
